Mentorship and Advocacy Program

The Freedom4Youth Advocates is a University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) campus organization made up of UCSB student. The UCSB students are trained and supervised by Freedom4Youth, Director, Billi Jo Starr and Program Director, Meghann Newell, MSW. The Freedom4Youth Advocates provide positive peer associations, mentorship, tutoring, career and educational counseling to youth involved in the juvenile justice system. Since 2014 Freedom4Youth Advocates have a combined total of 15,768 volunteer hours. There are currently 42 active mentors and a total of 30 alumni mentors. The alumni have gone on to receive their masters in social work, enter teacher education programs and law schools or join the workforce as counselors, case managers, and law enforcement officers. The Freedom4Youth Advocates at UCSB provide direct service programming to: Los Prietos Boys Camp & Academy; Santa Maria Juvenile Hall; Alternative Report and Resource Center; Westside Boys & Girls Club; La Cuesta High School; and the Department of Social Services.
